  1. Hi. I visited Dracula Castle 5 years ago, but I've never known the real Dracula's home is in Poenari.

You may give us more information about Poienari:by the way, is this a castle or a fortress?

  2. Sorry for the late reply, but I am happy that you had the opportunity to visit Bran Castle.I strongly recommend you a visit to Poienari "Castle" because through this blog I intend to promote more the authentic and unknown sights than so-called sightseeing included in "Top ten sights in"...

From my point of view, I consider Poienari a fortress, not a castle; it was set up by the political leaders of Wallachia in 13th century, but its peak period was under Vlad Tepes (The Impaler) who consolidated the construction and took advantage of its strategical location: the fortress is situated on a cliff, surrounded by natural "elements" as Arges River and Carpathian Mountains hills.

The Turkish captured the fortress in 1462, but Vlad the Impaler managed to save his life through a hidden corridor that had lead towards the Northern side of the mountains.

Unfortunately, after Vlad Impaler death, it started the fortress' decline culminating in its abandonment.

  3. From the tourism perspective, the negative aspect about Poienari fortress is related to the accessibility: the fortress can be reached only by car and furthermore it requests a good physical condition from the potential visitors who should be able to climb more than 1400 stairs being also surrounded by a threatening mountains landscape.

    So, the adventure may start!!!
